About Us

North Carolina requires all school districts in the state to have a program or school to help students that are not thriving in a traditional school environment. The population of Davidson River is a diverse group that includes students who have lost course credit, may have been retained in their younger years and/or students who would not otherwise graduate with their age appropriate peers.

For over 20 years, Davidson River School has been the alternative school that has served high school students in Transylvania County. With an alternative, individualized and caring approach, we are able to offer a myriad of creative educational environments and delivery methods for classes - all without compromise to core curriculum, testing and all standards held by the other county high schools.

  • Full day Programs: A student's' Personalized Educational Plan (PEP) determines whether a four course track vs. a focused, intensive credit recovery will be the individual student's delivery model for the semester. Students' PEPs and their successful acclimation is regularly discussed among staff, highly qualified teachers and mentors in order to best serve every student at DRS.

  • Dual Enrollment/ Half-Day Programs with Blue Ridge Community College: Students, having achieved success within the walls of DRS, may also take courses such as Auto Mechanics, Welding, Machining through Blue Ridge Community College. Generally, these students take two academic courses at DRS and two at the community college. Transportation is provided. Course credit earned counts on both high school and college transcripts.

  • Part-time Enrollment at DRS: Students who would benefit from more intensive academic support yet can successfully navigate a traditional high school environment can take two core academic courses at DRS, with two afternoon courses (electives, career pathways, JROTC, etc) at Brevard High School. Transportation is provided.

Diploma Options: Students who have lost course credit may apply for the Differentiated Diploma offered at Davidson River School. This diploma meets the requirements for a high school diploma in North Carolina but requires fewer electives than at the traditional high school. It is appropriate for students who were retained in younger years, lost course credit due to moving between states or have life circumstances that require entering the workforce as soon as possible.
